Monrovia -the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) has opened a Clinic in Montserrado County as part of efforts to ensure speedy dispensation of justice in the County. The Clinic is an establishment of the LNBA aimed at providing free legal services for party litigants who cannot afford legal fees.
The project was temporary suspension after its major donor, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Legal Professional Development and Anti-Corruption Program in Liberia (LPACE) ended its operation in the country. On yesterday, September 25,2024, LNBA’S President Sylvester Rennie says the funding to reopen the clinic was as a result of intense discussion with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). He disclose that After considerating their plan, the UNDP released to us over US$121,000 for the opening of only the clinic in Montserrado County ” further that during the training of lawyers and case workers that are going to work with the clinic.
According to he, that the funds is only for a year period. Cllr. says within one year they are going to release at least 200 pretrial detainees Rennie disclosed. That the said Clinic is being implemented by the LNBA in partnership with UNDP project aimed at providing pro-bono legal services to those who cannot afford it. He added that if they are successful with Montserrado County project,we will be able to extend the project to other counties where we have the clinics.
In his interjection, the LNBA’S secretary General, Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah caution his colleagues of accountability to the project. “UNDP is much concern about accountability and we are to ensure that their money is used for the project. After that we can ask for extension to other counties,” Cllr. Varmah stressed accountability for the project.
