Trial Judges In Liberia to Host 1st International Judges Conference

Liberian Judges’  President Nancy Finda Sammy describes the conference as a image building of the country judicial system

Over 300 delegates of judges and jurists from across Africa, Europe and the United States of America are expected in the country from May 6 to the 10th to attend the International Association of Judges (IAJ) conference.

The conference, according to Judge Nancy Finda Sammy,  President of the National Association of Trial Judges of Liberia (NATJL) is organozed by the African Regional Group as part of its  Annual Rotational Meeting.

The five-day gathering is under the topic” The Judiciary In Contemporary Times: Dispensing Justice in the New Information Age.” It will be held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Minsterial Complex.

At a press conference on May 2, at the Temple of Justice, Sammy disclosed that

Liberia Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh will deliver the keynote address.

Justice Yuoh will deliver on the topic; “The impact of the media on the public’s perception of Justice in the new information age”

Other speakers, including  Professor PLO Lumumba of Kenya, Sammy said are expected to deliver papers.

Proff. luminaries will speak on the topic “Building Integrity through Positive Actions : A mean of Ensuring an independent judiciary.

President Joseph Boakai expected to lead  an array of government officials at the opening session of the conference, in the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Minsterial Complex.

Judge Sammy said hosting the conference for the first time would help to improve the image of the country’s judicial system.

“This is good for our country peace building process particularly with the new government and the gathering of legal luminaries to Liberia would also improve the image building of the country legal system, Judge Nancy Finda Sammy

Liberia gained membership of the IAJ in November 2017, during its conference held at Santiago, Chile, Judge Sammy disclosed.

Emphasing on  membership, Judge Sammy said, IAJ has a seat at United Nations Secretary Council, where it has been a voice for judges throughout the world.

“IAJ has a seat at the Security Council, and so,  when people  or government messed up with judges around the world, they would support the judge,” Sammy said of the IAJ.

Given an example, Sammy explained that a judge in Tunisia was suspended by the President. But the IAJ currently on the back of the government to lift  the  suspension. If they don’t adhere to the demand of IAJ, they are going to take up the matter against the country to the Security Council.”

The International Association of Judges (IAJ) is a professional, non-political International organisation, and its key objective is to promote the rule of law, access to justice, independence of the Judiciary and the promotion of human rights.

The organisation was founded in 1958 in Salisburg, Australia, and has its headquarters in Rome, Italy.

IAJ currently comprises 98 member countries and representatives group from five continents with the African Regional Group comprises 20 countries, including Liberia.
